Why do small ants show up in Plano kitchens after rain?
Heavy rain floods nests in turf and mulch, and colonies move toward drier, protected spaces such as wall voids behind a kitchen. Dry, hot spells do the opposite, sending ants toward the moisture in sinks and dishwashers. Either swing can start a trail, which is why ants often appear within days of a weather change.
North Texas swings between the two. Annual rainfall runs roughly 35 to 38 inches, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area averages about 17 days a year at or above 100 degrees, on records kept at DFW Airport. A colony can be flooded out one week and dried out the next, and the house is the one steady, sheltered, watered place nearby.
That is also why a single treatment does not always end it. If the weather pushes new ants toward the house every few weeks, the exterior needs a fresh barrier and the baits need a second look.
Why does spraying the ants I can see make things worse?
Repellent sprays kill the foragers you see but scatter the rest. Odorous house ants in particular can split a colony into several smaller ones when disturbed, and a sprayed trail simply moves. Baits work the other way: the ants carry the active ingredient home slowly, so the nest is reached before the trail disappears.
For the first few days after baits go down, you may see more ants, not fewer. That means they are feeding. Resist the urge to wipe the bait away or spray the line. If activity is still heavy after about two weeks, call back so a technician can check whether the bait is the right match or whether another colony is feeding nearby.
A good habit during treatment: wipe up sweets and crumbs, store pet food in a sealed container and fix drips, but leave the bait stations alone.
How are odorous house ants different from rover ants?
Odorous house ants are dark brown to black, about an eighth of an inch long, and follow clear trails to sweets; crushed, they smell like rotten coconut. Rover ants are even smaller, uniformly dark and wander erratically. Both nest in soil, mulch and wall voids, but they favor different foods, so the bait choice matters.
Both feed on honeydew, the sugary waste of aphids and similar insects on shrubs and trees, which is one reason a thick bed of ornamental plants beside the wall helps them. Rover ants are often found around leaky plumbing and in damp mulch, and they can be slow to take certain baits.
A technician may place two different baits at once to find out which one the colony prefers. That is normal, and it is faster than guessing one at a time.
What can I do in my yard to keep ants from trailing indoors?
Keep mulch pulled back from the foundation, trim shrubs and tree limbs so they do not touch the house, and fix leaks around hose bibs and sprinkler heads. Ants use branches and fences as bridges. Fewer bridges and less standing moisture near the slab means fewer trails reaching the walls.
Many Plano subdivisions have homeowner association landscaping rules, so check the guidelines before changing beds along a shared fence line. The HOA, irrigation and pests guide explains how sprinkler schedules and mulch depth affect ants, fire ants and mosquitoes.
